Dumbbell
EquipmentDefinition
The dumbbell is a single-handed tool made of a central handle and two side weights. It lets you train every muscle group independently, correcting strength imbalances between the two sides of the body.
The dumbbell is probably the most versatile tool that exists in the gym. A short bar with weights on the ends, gripped with a single hand: simple in concept, huge in potential. You can train chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs and core without ever changing implement.
Compared to the barbell, the dumbbell has a key advantage: unilateral work. Each arm (or leg) has to handle its own load, without the stronger side compensating for the weaker one. This makes dumbbells essential for correcting strength asymmetries and for increasing range of motion in exercises like bench presses or lateral raises.
Two main types exist. Fixed dumbbells have a preset weight and are the ones you find on the rack at the gym, from 2 kg up to over 50 kg. Adjustable dumbbells let you add or remove plates, taking up less space: ideal for a home gym. Coatings vary: bare cast iron, rubber, polyurethane or hex (which don't roll on the floor).
The dumbbell requires more stabilization than the barbell, which means you'll lift less weight but activate more accessory muscles. That's not a limit: it's a feature. If you train for hypertrophy, dumbbells are irreplaceable for muscle isolation and movement control.
