Definition

Grip pads are rubber or neoprene cushions placed between your palm and the barbell to protect your skin and improve grip. They're the modern alternative to gym gloves: more hygienic, less bulky, and without the sweaty-sponge feeling after three sets.

Grip pads are shaped pieces of non-slip material, usually rubber or neoprene, that rest on your palm and hook onto your fingers through small loops. They don't wrap your whole hand like a glove: they only cover the contact area with the bar. That makes them more breathable, easier to put on and take off, and far simpler to keep clean.

Their main purpose is to protect the palms from calluses, blisters, and abrasions during exercises that generate a lot of friction: pull-ups, rows, deadlifts, shrugs. They also offer a slight grip improvement thanks to the rubberized surface, but they don't compare to lifting straps when it comes to holding heavy loads.

Who should use them: anyone who wants to protect their hands without sacrificing tactile feedback. Traditional gloves add thickness, reduce proprioceptive feedback, and after a few weeks become a breeding ground for bacteria. Grip pads solve all three problems. They're particularly useful for high-volume lifters whose hands tend to take a beating. They're not an accessory to lift more weight: they're an accessory to spare yourself the discomfort of trashed hands.
