Knee Wraps
AccessoriesDefinition
Knee wraps are long, thick elastic bands wrapped around the knee to provide support and store elastic energy during heavy squats and lifts. They increase joint stability and can boost the load lifted by 5-10% thanks to elastic recoil.
Knee wraps aren't simple protectors: they're a genuine mechanical aid. As you descend into the squat, the wrap stretches and stores elastic energy. As you stand up, that energy is returned, helping you drive through the sticking point of the concentric phase. This mechanism explains why, in equipped powerlifting competitions, lifters move significantly heavier loads than in raw lifting.
The difference compared to knee sleeves is substantial. Knee sleeves are neoprene tubes that offer compression and warmth, but very little elastic rebound. Wraps are bands wound with variable tension around the joint, and the amount of elastic energy depends on how tight you wrap them. The tighter you wrap, the more rebound you get, but also the more the movement is altered compared to a free squat.
When to use them: only on the heaviest sets, roughly above 80% of your 1RM, and only on exercises that involve deep knee flexion such as squats and the leg press. Put them on right before the set and take them off right after. Don't keep them wrapped between sets: prolonged compression reduces circulation and offers no additional benefit. If you don't compete in equipped powerlifting, knee wraps are an occasional tool, not a fixed part of your gear.
