Smith Machine
EquipmentDefinition
The Smith machine is a piece of equipment with a barbell guided on fixed vertical rails. It eliminates the need to stabilize the weight laterally, letting you focus on the push and train safely to failure without a spotter.
The Smith machine is a structure with a barbell that slides on two vertical steel rails. The bar can be locked at any height with a simple wrist rotation, thanks to the safety hooks integrated along the entire stroke.
It's a machine that divides the fitness world: there are those who consider it inferior to the free barbell and those who use it regularly. The reality is that it has specific applications. The guided path reduces the work of stabilizer muscles, which can be an advantage when you want to isolate a target muscle without synergist fatigue limiting work volume.
The most common Smith machine exercises include squats (with various foot positions), flat and incline bench, overhead press, hip thrust and lunges. The main advantage is safety: you can push to muscular failure and lock the bar instantly if you can't complete the rep. This makes it especially useful for drop sets and high-intensity training.
The effective sled weight varies between 0 and 25 kg depending on the model and the counterbalance system. Always check the weight indicated on the machine or ask the gym staff. Some modern Smith machines have slightly inclined rails (about 7 degrees) to follow a more natural path. Don't replace the free barbell with the Smith machine: use it as a complement, especially for isolation work and intensity techniques.
